Jazz: Jazz is America’s great contribution to the 20th century. It started in New Orleans and after spreading through the US became important throughout the world. Owing to its creativity and improvisation it has developed in a wide variety of forms under the loose heading of jazz. Modern day jazz musicians are far removed from the original pioneers of the music but they all have the same distinguishing characteristics of risk taking and discovery. Complex chord structures and advanced harmonies require great technical skill and feeling for the music. There are top quality, successful jazz musicians in Scotland today forging ahead with new forms of jazz, whilst others maintain the great tradition handed down over the generations. |
